What Every Trimmer Attachment Is Actually For
By URBANER Founder Lei-chun Ray LinShare
Quick answer: There are only four kinds of attachment worth understanding. A guide comb sets length. A narrow blade cuts lines. A rotary nose and ear head trims inside curved openings safely. A wide blade removes bulk fast. Everything else in a multi-piece box is a variation on one of those four, usually a differently sized comb.
TL;DR
- Guide comb: sets how much hair is left. The only part that controls length.
- Narrow blade (about 20 mm): lip line, neckline, sideburns, brow edges.
- Rotary nose and ear head: enclosed spinning blade, for curved openings.
- Wide blade (32-40 mm): bulk removal across cheeks and jaw.
- Eyebrow comb: a very short guide comb, usually 2-4 mm.
The four types
| Attachment | What it does | Use it for | Do not use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjustable guide comb | Holds the blade a set distance from the skin | Setting length: 2-14 mm on most facial tools | Any edge or line, where it makes the cut fuzzy |
| Narrow blade, about 20 mm | Cuts flush with no comb | Lip line, neckline, cheek line, sideburn edge | Removing bulk; it takes far too many passes |
| Rotary nose and ear head | Spinning blade behind a rounded guard | Visible nose and ear hair only, to about 6 mm depth | Eyebrows, where the geometry is wrong |
| Wide blade, 32-40 mm | Covers a large area per pass | Full beards from about 10 mm | Any line; it cannot follow a curve |
| Eyebrow comb | A very short fixed comb | Shortening brow hairs without changing shape | Anything you want a hard edge on |
Guide combs: the part people misunderstand
A comb does not cut. It holds the blade a fixed distance off the skin, and that distance is the length you are left with. So a 5 mm setting leaves 5 mm of hair; it does not remove 5 mm.
Two designs exist. A click-stop adjustable comb moves through fixed detents and holds its position under pressure. Loose snap-on guards flex, so pressing harder on one cheek makes that side shorter, which is where most asymmetry comes from. Full length reference: what 2-14 mm actually looks like.
Blade width decides what a head can do
This is the single most useful thing to understand about attachments. A blade can only cut cleanly along a surface it can stay flat against. A 40 mm blade bridges the dip under your nose, so it cannot follow a lip. A 20 mm blade covers about a third of the upper lip and stays in contact through the pass. Neither is better; they do different jobs. The reasoning in full: beard trimmer vs mustache trimmer.
Which head for which job
| Job | Head | Comb? |
|---|---|---|
| Set beard or stubble length | Any blade | Yes, 2-14 mm |
| Lip line | Narrow blade | No |
| Neckline | Narrow blade | No |
| Sideburn bottom edge | Narrow blade | No |
| Nose hair | Rotary nose/ear | Built in |
| Ear rim | Rotary nose/ear | Built in |
| Eyebrow length | Eyebrow head | Yes, longest setting |
| Full beard bulk | Wide blade | Yes |
How many attachments do you actually need?
For a clean-shaven face with a mustache: one narrow blade and one comb. For stubble or a short beard: the same two. Add a rotary nose and ear head from your thirties. A wide blade only becomes useful past about 10 mm of beard. That is three heads, maximum, for most men.
The compact multi-head grooming tool at covers nose/ear, mustache with a 2-14 mm comb, and eyebrows with two combs. The multi-head grooming tool at adds a beard head, all on a USB-C dock. If you only need lines and length, a single tool such as the Precision Mustache Trimmer is enough.
Caring for heads
- Rinse after every use, comb off, head detached where possible.
- Dry fully before refitting. Water trapped under a blade starts corrosion.
- Do not force a head on. Most snap in one orientation only.
- Store combs flat. A warped comb holds the blade at the wrong angle and cuts unevenly.

Frequently asked questions
What does each trimmer attachment do?
Combs set length, narrow blades cut lines, rotary nose and ear heads trim curved openings safely, and wide blades remove bulk. Almost every attachment in a large kit is a variation on one of those four.
Does a guide comb number mean how much hair is removed?
No, it is how much is left. A 5 mm comb leaves 5 mm of hair regardless of how long it was before.
Can I use the nose hair head on my eyebrows?
No. The geometry is wrong: a rotary head is built for the inside of a curved opening, not a flat brow line. Use the eyebrow head or small scissors.
Why do multi-piece kits have so many attachments?
Because attachment count sells. Most of the pieces are combs of different lengths, which an adjustable click-stop comb replaces entirely.
Which attachment should I use for a neckline?
None. Remove the comb and use the bare narrow blade. A comb keeps the blade off the skin, which is the opposite of what an edge needs.
