Why a wide blade cannot cut a straight line
Your upper lip is a curve with a dip in the middle. A 40 mm blade bridges that dip: the ends touch, the centre does not, and the moment you tilt the tool to reach the centre you cut deeper on one side. It is the same reason you do not shave a curved surface with a long straight edge held flat.
A 20 mm blade spans roughly one third of the upper lip, so it stays in contact with skin through the whole pass. That is the entire mechanical argument, and it is why barbers keep a separate detail trimmer on the counter.
