How to Blend Sideburns Into a Short Beard

Blend sideburns into a short beard by creating a small transition between lengths, then softening the boundary. Start longer than you think you need. It is easier to remove a little more hair than to recover a patch cut too short.

Choose your starting lengths

First decide the length you want to keep across the beard. The sideburn near the haircut can be slightly shorter, with a narrow transition between the two. Use only combs that fit your exact trimmer. Numbers on different brands' guards are not interchangeable; check the length in millimeters.

For example, if you use 6 mm across a short beard, you might test 5 mm in a small transition area and 4 mm higher on the sideburn. That is a starting example, not a formula for every haircut or hair texture. If those lengths look too short, stop and use longer compatible settings.

Blend one small area at a time

1. Comb into the natural fall. Look at the join between your haircut, sideburn, and beard. Keep your head level and identify matching points on both sides.
2. Set the beard length first. Use the longer comb and consistent, light passes. Do not shorten the entire cheek to match the sideburn.
3. Work within a small transition band. Move to the next shorter setting only in that band. Keep the top of the beard fuller unless your intended style calls for otherwise.
4. Lift away at the end of each pass. Ease the comb outward as you approach the boundary instead of driving the blade flat into it.
5. Check the other side early. Alternate sides and compare at normal viewing distance. Avoid finishing one side completely before checking the other.
6. Tidy the outline last. Use the detail head only for stray hairs beyond the edge. It does not replace the comb for blending bulk.

When a line still shows

Brush the hair again and check it in even light. A shadow may reflect natural density or growth direction. If a clear step remains, use an intermediate compatible setting and a few light passes across the join. Do not keep going shorter to erase every shadow.
